Crochet Humpty Dumpty Egg

This happy little guy is crocheted using a modified version of my Easter Egg pattern. He certainly doesn't fit in to your Easter decorating, but he does make a cute baby toy, baby shower decoration or gift topper.

Crocheted Humpty Dumpty Egg
NOTE: When working in rounds, I mark the end of each round with a piece of contrasting yarn and move it as I complete each round.

4-ply yarn in white, blue and red and very small amount of yellow for the bow
G or H crochet hook
2 small beads for eyes (or black yarn to make French Knots for the eyes)
Fiber fill

Starting at the bottom of the egg with blue yarn:
ch 3. Join with sl st in 3rd ch from hook to form a ring
Rnd 1: Work 8 sc in ring
Rnd 2: *sc in next sc, inc in next sc. Repeat from *around (12 sc)
Rnd 3: Repeat rnd 2 (18 sc)
Rnd 4: sc in each sc around, increasing 1 sc in every 3rd sc. (24 sc)
Rnd 5: work even for one round (24 sc)
Rnd 6: sc in each sc around; increasing in every 4th sc. (30 sc)
Rnd 7-8: work even for two rounds (30 sc)
Rnd 9: sc in each sc around, increasing in every 10th sc. (33 sc)
Rnd 10-11: work even (33 sc)
Rnd 12: Change color to red. work even 1 rnd. (33 sc)
Rnd 13-15: change color to white. work even (33 sc)
Rnd 16: sc in each sc around decreasing in every 10th sc (30 sc)

Begin stuffing your egg. You will need to add more at the end but I think you can get a better shape if you begin at this point.

Rnd 17: Work even (30 sc).
Rnd 18: sc in each sc decreasing every 5th sc (25 sc)
Rnd 19-20: work even (25)
Rnd 21: Sc in each around decreasing every 4th sc (20 sc). Continue stuffing your egg.
Rnd 22: Repeat last rnd. (16 sc)
Rnd 23: Sc in each sc around, decreasing every 3rd sc (12 sc)
Rnd 24: Sc in each sc around, decreasing every other stitch for two rounds till closed. Break off.

Make 2 in white
Chain 20.  2 sc in each chain

Make 2 in blue
Chain 25.  2 sc in each chain

with blue yarn
Rnd 1-5:  Follow pattern for egg
Rnd: 6: Decrease in every sc to close off

With red yarn, chain 10. work 2 sc in each chain

Make 2 with white yarn
Ch 3, join wit sl st to form ring.
Rnd 1: work 7 sc in ring.  sl st in next sc and tie off.

Ch 6, 1 sc in second st from hook and each across (5 sc) Sinch in center with matching yarn when sewing to the body.

Sew on beads for eyes or embroider French Knots for the eyes.
MOUTH: Using a small piece of red yarn, chain about 11.  Using thread and needle, stitch into place.
Sew cheeks into place.
Sew arms and legs onto the body.
Sew on small yellow bow.
Lightly stuff hat and sew on at a slight angle.
Attach red squiggly to top of hat.

CAUTION: if making as a toy, be certain the eyes and small pieces are securely attached.

Truly, this is the sweetest, most handsome, and well dressed Humpty Dumpty that I have ever laid eyes on! Even with those well documented instructions though, I will let you do the crocheting and I will be happy to do the admiring. Never mind the bit of jealousy that I feel in my heart:)

Many years ago someone gave my new baby a humpty dumpty made of fabric and it was one of his favorite toys. I think this would make many a baby happy, especially with the happy face !
