Does this bring back memories? As a small child, I had a set of these little praying children hanging on the wall above my bed. A couple of years ago I was thrilled to find this set. It is hanging above the toddler bed in what our grandchildren call the "Nursery".

Scripture Cake Review
Well, here is my opinion of the Scripture Cake made from
the recipe I posted earlier:
The flavor of this cake was very good with a pleasing taste from the cinnamon and other spices. The raisins and figs were not overpowering as I thought they might. I was however, disappointed with the texture ~ a little too dry and crumbly. The Burnt Sugar syrup was the BEST! It made more than what I thought was needed to drizzle on the top, so I warmed the extra in the microwave to pour on each slice when serving. I think the syrup is what made the cake special.
This was a fun recipe to make and produced a very pretty cake, but I will search a bit more to find a moister version.

Scripture Cake with Burnt Jeremiah Syrup
I got the idea to try this cake from my blogging friend Lady Farmer Parables. It was popular in the late 1800's as a way to teach young girls baking skills and Bible verses. I decided to try this recipe after searching and finding many variations.See if you can determine the ingredients from the Bible Verses

Beat flour mixture into butter and egg mixture, alternating with milk, until flour is just blended in. Beat egg whites until stiff; fold into batter. Fold in chopped nuts, figs and raisins. Turn into 10-inch tube pan that has been greased and dusted with flour.
Bake at 325 degrees F until a cake tester inserted into cake comes out clean, about an hour and ten minutes.Remove from oven and place on a wire rack to cool. After fifteen minutes, turn cake out from pan onto wire rack to cool completely. Drizzle with Burnt Jeremiah Syrup.
Burnt Jeremiah Syrup:
1 1/2 cups Jeremiah 6:20 (sugar)1/2 cup Genesis 24:45 (water)1/4 cup Genesis 18:8 (butter)
In a 2-quart saucepan over low heat, melt sugar, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. After sugar melts, continue cooking, stirring continuously, until it is a deep golden brown. God, my God, I cry out
Your beloved needs You now
God, be near, calm my fear
And take my doubt
Your kindness is what pulls me up
Your love is all that draws me in
I will lift my eyes to the Maker
Of the mountains I can’t climb
I will lift my eyes to the Calmer
Of the oceans raging wild
I will lift my eyes to the Healer
Of the hurt I hold inside
I will lift my eyes, lift my eyes to You
God, my God, let Mercy sing Her melody over me
God, right here all I bring Is all of me
‘Cause You are and You were and You will be forever
The Lover I need to save me
‘Cause You fashioned the earth and You hold it together, God
So hold me now
I will lift my eyes to the Maker
Of the mountains I can’t climb
I will lift my eyes to the Calmer
Of the oceans raging wild
I will lift my eyes to the Healer
Of the hurt I hold inside
I will lift my eyes, lift my eyes to You
Cause you are and you hope and you will be forever
No longer, I need to say, You fastened the earth and you hold it together
God, you hold me now
I will lift my eyes to the Maker
Of the mountains I can’t climb
I will lift my eyes to the Calmer
Of the oceans raging wild
I will lift my eyes to the Healer
